The Edit

Pop That Mumma is reshaping how women prepare for childbirth.

Founded by a doula and hypnobirthing practitioner, Poppy Child, the platform offers practical tools and raw insights to help women and their birth partners approach labour with confidence.

Through online courses and events like her upcoming Live Stream Birth Prep Masterclass on Wednesday 12th February 2024, Pop That Mumma is giving women the knowledge and support they need to take control of their experience.

Tell us about Pop That Mumma, how did it all begin?

Pop That Mumma started as a passion project – a space where I could share real, raw, and empowering birth education that wasn’t sugar-coated or outdated.

Like so many women, I went into birth trusting the mainstream narrative, only to realise a lot of what I was told didn’t match reality. That frustration led me to train as a doula and hypnobirthing practitioner, but more than that, it made me want to reframe the entire conversation around birth.

I wanted something fresh, modern, and practical – not just for mums, but for birth partners too, so they could actually step into their role instead of feeling like a spare part.

What started as a few honest posts on social media quickly grew into a global community of women reclaiming their birth experiences, and Pop That Mumma was born.

How have your own birth experiences inspired your work?

My first birth was a turning point. I did what most women do – took a hypnobirthing course, learned to "breathe through it…”, but I knew something wasn’t quite right.

I needed practical tools. I needed real talk about how to navigate contractions, not just the polished version of birth that gets taught.

Luckily, late in pregnancy, I found educators who weren’t afraid to be honest. Educators who talked about intensity, vocalisation, movement, and the psychology of labour. That changed everything for me.

By the time I had my second baby, I was fully prepared, vocal, and in control. That birth shaped the way I teach today. Women deserve to know the full picture because when they do, they walk into birth strong.

You’re all about empowering women. How does your Birth Box course help them prepare for a positive labour and birth?

Birth Box is the course I wish I had the first time around. It’s straight-talking, practical, and real. No fluff, no sugar-coating. It gives women the confidence to handle birth, however it unfolds, through science-backed hypnobirthing techniques, so they can work with their body, not against it.

  • Pain management strategies that go way beyond deep breathing
  • Advocacy skills so they feel in control of their choices
  • Guided meditations to rewire fear into confidence
  • Birth partner training so they know exactly how to support

It’s all accessible anytime through an app, so women can prepare on their own terms.

What are the benefits of hypnobirthing?

Hypnobirthing is often misunderstood. It’s not just about a calm birth; it’s about understanding birth.

It helps through the following:

  • Reducing fear and anxiety so adrenaline doesn’t slow labour
  • How to stay in control instead of feeling overwhelmed
  • How to manage intensity naturally through breathwork, movement, and mindset shifts
  • Helping them to make informed choices instead of feeling pressured into interventions
  • Get birth partners actively involved so they are part of the process, not bystanders

At its core, hypnobirthing helps women feel safe. And when a woman feels safe, birth unfolds more smoothly.

How does meditation contribute to a positive birth experience?

Oh, I love talking about meditation. It is SO powerful.

Birth is as much a mental experience as it is physical. If the mind is tense, the body follows.

My guided meditations help women train their mind to stay calm even when birth gets intense, rewire fear-based thoughts that come from movies, horror stories, or past experiences, tap into the power of visualisation to create a sense of safety and control, and stay deeply connected to their body and baby.

By practicing meditation throughout pregnancy, women condition their nervous system to stay relaxed, which helps labour progress more efficiently.

You’re hosting a Live Stream Birth Prep Masterclass for couples on Wednesday 12th February. What can streamers expect from this world-first masterclass?

This is going to be a game-changer for expectant couples.

Birth partners often feel clueless about how to help during labour, and women need strong, intuitive support.

This Valentine’s special masterclass is all about bringing them together to feel prepared, connected, and confident.

Couples will learn:

  • The role of the love hormone oxytocin and how to keep it flowing
  • Birth partners will learn about hands-on pain management techniques to use instantly
  • How to advocate for birth preferences in a hospital setting
  • Breathwork and vocalisation techniques to manage contractions naturally
  • How to work together as a team so birth feels supported and powerful

It’s completely free and streamed live, so couples can join from anywhere.

I want every woman to walk into birth feeling strong, informed, and supported, and this masterclass will get them there.
