Bumpstart is an independent destination store for baby and nursery equipment, located in the idyllic countryside of Whaddon, just 10 minutes outside of Milton Keynes.
This year Bumpstart have achieved Best Independent Nursery Retailer 2024 – for the third time! To celebrate this incredible moment, we caught up with store owner, Susannah on the inspiration behind the brand and her favourite industry moments.
The inspiration behind the shop came from Helen’s experiences as a young mother. Back then, finding baby equipment was a challenge – there were limited options, and she had to drive long distances and wait months for delivery. She believed new parents deserved better! Motivated by this vision, she also wanted a career that was flexible, close to home, and family oriented. The family farm was looking to diversify, and the opportunity arose to transform a barn into a retail space, so she took the plunge!
Over 30 years on, I (Susannah) have followed in my mum Helen’s footsteps and am enjoying taking the reins of Bumpstart for the next generation!
We love an innovative design, if it solves a problem, fills a gap, has a feature that will make parenting that little bit easier we are all for it!
Aside from the products, it’s got to be the people! Playing a small part in helping a new parent navigate the overwhelm of preparing for their new arrival is a huge privilege.
Our days can vary a lot, we are great multi-taskers here at Bumpstart and you’ll often find us undertaking a myriad of tasks. First and foremost, serving our lovely customers, but we’ll also be picking and packing orders, taking deliveries, answering emails, updating the website and making content!
There are so many to list, we’ve been through waves over the years, but being named Best Independent Nursery Retailer (now, for the third time) is truly wonderful and an accolade we are so proud of.
On a day-to-day basis, it is wonderful to see so many familiar faces come back and share their stories. Some of the original babies from the early 90s are coming back to us as expectant parents!
Bumpstart has a super exciting year ahead, we have lots of newness to share and oodles of improvements happening both in-store and online! Watch this space.
